The bug like Short SC1, built by Short’s in Northern Ireland for a UK Govt. contract. It did much valuable research into VTOL stability and control. Powered by four Rolls Royce RB108 vertical lift turbojets for lift, and one RB108 for cruise. Two were built, XG900 & XG905. First conventional flight April 1957, first free hover flight October 1958, and transition flight April 1960 by XG905. The SC.1 was also equipped with the first fly by wire control system for a VTOL aircraft.
It had quite a long career for a research aircraft, the last flight by XG905 was in May 1973. Both SC1’s survive in museums in London and Northern Ireland, The model represents XG905 as it was in the early 1960’s. Dynamic parts are canopy hatch and lift engine inlet louvres.
