This is a model of the old Mountain View School in Tapoco, North Carolina, which was originally constructed in 1953, and housed both the Mountain View High School and Mountain View Elementary School into the 1990s. The original T-shaped building contained a large multipurpose room at one end, with restrooms, an office, library, lunch room and twelve classrooms making up the rest of the building. An addition of another building in the mid-1950s to the campus added a vocational classroom, home economics classroom and gymnasium, which is similar in size and appearance to the Gymnasium buildings at Robbinsville and Stecoah built during that era. The newer building helped the county establish a high school program at the school, which occurred by the mid-1950s. The building had around fourteen teachers and served about 250 students in the remote Tapoco, Fontana Dam and Yellow Creek areas of Graham County. The school operated until 1994, when it was consolidated with the school in Robbinsville (along with the school in Stecoah) due to road improvements and declining enrollment, as well as the construction of a new Middle/High School at Robbinsville. The building stood abandoned until around 2010, when it was partially demolished and the foundation slab turned into a tennis court and open patio, as the school grounds now serve as a park. However, the original multipurpose room, Gymnasium and Vocational Building still stand in a very remote area near Tapoco. Feel free to use this model as you see fit, on the condition that you contact me first so I know where it is being used (I'd love to see it wherever it ends up), and give me a mention or credit wherever it is used or published. #School #VanishedAmerica #MidCenturyModern #RetroArchitecture
