Battleships may not be practical anymore, but they look so cool! So I’ve been working on a series of World War II-style Battleships and Cruisers of various sizes and capabilities.
This is the 1st one, the Hamilcar, lead ship of the Barcino Class. This would have been the largest battleship ever built, 325 meters long. Like any large battleships, the Hamilcar would have been a huge target, especially from the air. Thus the overkill amount of AA. The armor follows the US “All-or-nothing” philosophy. The design is an amalgam of all the major battleships in WWII, see if you can spot them all :-)!
The Hamilcar uses both radar and optical gun control, plus has accommodation for observation planes, with dual launchers on the stern.
- Top Speed is 29 knots, so on the slow side, but impressive for a ship this size, at the time.
- 12ea 400mm/55cal Main Armament. Range 19 miles
- 30ea 125mm Secondary Armament
- 16ea 125mm Dual Purpose AA FLAK-style guns
- 120ea 40mm License Built Bofors Style AA guns
- 38ea 20mm License Built Oerlikon Style AA Guns, Permanently Mounted to deck
- 32ea Deck mounted torpedo tubes
The Hamilcar was the only ship built in its class. Just too expensive and too big. So lessons learned during its design and construction were used on its follow up, the Carcassona Class. That style battle ship will appear at another time, but I think a cruiser will come in between the battleships
All the parts on the Hamilcar were built by me, ryksuga, with the exception to the Props, which came from Sketchy@Best’s “Simple Ship Propellers.” That’s not to say I did not deconstruct some models to figure out how they did certain things :-), but I did make everything (except the props) myself.
It’s a big, highly detailed model, enjoy.
