Bishops Gate Bridge Circa AD 1500 Norwich UK

Duncan B.
Bishop’s Gate bridge was built on the site of an ancient Roman crossing into the town. On the far bank away from the town was ‘Lollards Pit’ an abandoned chalk quarry used in the middle ages for the burning of heretics. In 1549 the gate was attacked during the Ketts Rebellion, whilst rebuilt the workmanship was of a poor standard and it began to subside. By 1792 it was seen more as a barrier to trade and the upper parts were taken down. The repaired bridge stands to this day. The City Council provides a detailed archaeological report. #Bishops_Gate_Bridge #Norwich_City_Walls
