Baptized as a stage of the Sun, then changed his name to celebrate the tradition that St. Paul would have reached Italy in the docking area of the Fuorigrotta. The structure was inaugurated December 6, 1959. the original design included only a ring, the one currently on the top level, but on specific requests it was added a lower, below the street level. The initial capacity was 87 500 spectators standing. The stands were travertine, both inside the lower than the upper one. Partially modernized during the European Championships of 1980 and the Football World Cup hosted by Italy in 1990, the stadium has undergone further renovation and redevelopment. It was later built a third ring, directly connected to the supporting structure of the roof, which brought the stadium capacity to 76,824 seats. The aforementioned ring, however, was then closed to spectators because, whenever the Naples marked a network, spectators cheering causing vibrations that, through the pillars supporting the roof, branched into the ground later spreading to buildings adjacent to the stadium and causing, well, many problems for residents (even injuries occurred in the apartments). In the drawing is represented the stadium during the 80s, before the creation of the third ring and coverage currently present.
