British turbo prop carrier based multi role strike aircraft, with contra rotating prop. Built by Westland. An ambitious project for a small company. A completely new type of engine and airframe together for carrier operations.
Always one of my favourites, although it was only produced in small numbers after a lengthy development period, and had a short and un-inspiring career.
The model represents WN328 flown by Cdr. “Smokey” Cowling C/O of Fleet Air Arm 830 Sqdn. on HMS Eagle during Operation Musketeer, the Suez campaign in late 1956. After pulling off the target after delivering his 500lb bomb through the target’s window at street level. The engine started to fail. Most descriptions attribute this to flack, but the description he gave to his son suggests it may have been the engine breaking up due to the high G pull-up. He manage to fly out to sea before ejecting and was rescued by Eagle’s SAR Westland Whirlwind helicopter.
The model has many dynamic parts, undercarriage, wing folding, flaps, air brakes, cockpit canopy, and tail hook.
