the ROMER portable CMM is a new technology that uses probe measuring as well as 3D laser scanning. the measuring software POLYWORKS can compare the measured points and scans to the original CAD model and show the deviations using tables, graphs and colour deviation. The ROMER is most commonly used for reverse engineering, which is the process of creating a CAD model from an already finished part.
my ROMER is a 7 axis arm that can measure within a 2m sphere of the base of the arm. This is a 3rd gen ROMER with an average accuracy of 0.030mm on probing and 0.060mm on scanning. Still not quite sufficient for the tolerances required for my in-process inspection of steam turbine blades, since some of my tolerance allowances are around 0.015mm. I'm sure series 4 will be better, So for now its a $100 000 toy to learn this new technology which I'm sure is going to be the future of manual inspection.
The table is of my own design, and incorperates the EROWA clamping system and a 42" television. The table houses a docking station for my DELL M6800 laptop which runs the ROMER arm and POLYWORKS sofware.
