BOAC (1954) - de Havilland Comet 1

707
G-ALYP - Yoke Peter This was the first Comet 1 delivered to BOAC back in 1952. Unfortunately, due to a severe metal fatigue problem caused by inadequate design, poor construction and structural failure, this Comet broke apart above the island of Elba in Italy only minutes after taking off from Rome Ciampino International Airport. The fallout of BOAC Flight 781 grounded all Comet 1s and Comet 1As, save for the RCAF versions, forever. The Comet went through painful years of reconstruction, but was ultimately brought down for the final time by the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. The original Comet 4C was made by SketchyCat, but was modified by AirbusA330, then modified again by SketchyVC10 into a Comet 2. I rebuilt and redrew this Comet model over and over again and added or changed it using pieces of my Sud Aviation Caravelle, L-1049 Super Constellation and replaced the wheels with ones made by Tesler placed on the original landing gear for the 737 made by AirplaneNerd777 and the generic gear originally made by WilliamT and finally resized the model to accurate dimensions thus creating the Comet 1. #781 #Airways #BOAC #British #Comet #Comet_1 #Corporation #de #DH106 #Flight #GALYP #Havilland #Overseas #Peter #Yoke
