An event pavilion I created for the Architecture for Humanity Boston space at the 2013 Architecture Boston Exposition (ABX). I’ve been volunteering with AFHB for several years. We had a large amount of 3/4” dia. x 72” bamboo poles donated to us and we wanted to use them to create a small pavilion at ABX. We give several 1 hr. long presentations for AIA learning credits each day at our space and needed an enclosure to accommodate 12-15 attendees and 1 or 2 speakers.
I created a series of 25’-35’ long ribs from the poles by linking them with short pieces of PVC and taping them together in pairs. I then added PVC fittings to the ends of each rib. Using PVC pipe and fittings, I also created a spiral base “ring” that the bamboo ribs fit into.
The enclosure is created by bending the ribs and inserting them in the base ring, from the inside of the spiral out, creating a series of arches that overlay each other. The arches were then lashed together at about half the crossings to create a free standing spiral wall about 7 ft. high.
We/I had also been experimenting with creating a fabric from plastic grocery bags that had been fused together with an iron set on low. We used this to wrap the frame and create a small room for our presentations.
