The University of Colorado at Boulder was funded in 1876. Its location at the foot of the Flatirons distinctive Tuscan architecture, CU-Boulder is often called "one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation." In 1917 the university underwent an major expansion, Charles Z. Klauder, the head architect of the firm hired to do the construction suggested the use of Italian Rural Architecture. A style that was developed in the mountains of northern Italy. This style of rough, textured sandstone walls and sloping, multi-leveled Spanish Tiled roofs. The University Memorial Center was built in 1953 by Trautwein & Howard of Philadelphia and James Hunter of Boulder. It was expanded on in 1964 (Moore & Bush), 1986 (Michael Barber) and in 2002 (Gensler). Model created by Adam Hecht.
