It was built in 1845 in classicist style. It is one of the most beautiful, historic buildings of the square. The house which was named after its one-time owner is particularly noteworthy with its wrought-iron balcony. Miklós Kárász was a poor nobleman who married the daughter of a rich judge. He knew how to make good business so he became very rich. His great-grandson Géza Kárász wasn’t a good businessman at all, and all the fortune of the family gone, the house, the mansion in Horgos and all the fields were sold in 1890.
Lajos Kossuth, the Governor of Hungary made his last public speech, on 12th July 1849 from the balcony of the building, in front of about 60000 people. Francis Joseph, the Emperor of Austria and the King of Hungary, stayed in this house in 1857. The Szeged National Council announced the victory of the ‘aster revolution’ from the balcony on 31st October 1918. #city #downtown #Klauzál_Square #Klauzál_tér #Szeged #tenement_house
