An Empire Russian Sofa or Settee, ca. 1815 to 1820. Mahogany frame and period silk upholstery over horsehair stuffing. Inspired by the conquests of France, the furniture of this period was a sort of propaganda for war. The heavy frames were many times decorated with gilt bronze pieces symbolizing annexed cultures; i.e., Egypt, Italy, Rome, and Greece.
