The name derives from the mountain range of the same name. It was established in 1989 by “Leali” Steel Group and began operating in 1991 on the Trieste-Genoa route and in 1992 inaugurated international flights from Verona to Munich. In 1994 it began working with Lufthansa and became a partner. In January 1999, after several years of collaboration, Lufthansa purchased 26% of the company's shares. In 2001 Air Dolomiti entered the airline market, flying with the Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft, and in 2003 Lufthansa achieved the ful acquisition, up to 100%, placing Michael Andreas Kraus as CEO of the company. In January 2009 Air Dolomiti became the Italian Launch Customer for the new Embraer E-190-200 and Embraer E-195 aircraft. The aircraft gradually replaced the BAe 146-300. In December 2012, Lufthansa decided to downsize Air Dolomiti, with the dismissal of the ATR aircraft. In 2023. Its fleet now consists of 17 Embraer E-195s and 2 Embraer E-190s.
