The SD70ACC is a Norfolk Southern rebuild of the EMD SD70. Originally manufactured from 1992 to 1999 by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), 80 units were delivered to Norfolk Southern numbered 2501 to 2580.
To extend the service life of these locomotives, these locomotives were rebuilt with AC traction motors, new Mitsubishi electronics, and a North American Safety cab similar to that of the SD70ACe-T4. The first two rebuilds, 1800 and 1801, were painted in a special gold and gray scheme to promote the rebuild project. 52 SD70 locomotives were rebuilt into SD70ACCs total, with the remaining engines sold to Progress Rail (PRLX) in 2020.
These locomotives can be spotted in revenue service trains across the Norfolk Southern system.
