M1886 bayonet was desinged for Lebel Mle.1886 rifle in late 19th century. The M1886/16 was desinged during WW1 when French army discovered, that over half meter long bayonets are useless in trenches (Lebel rifle with M1886 bayonet was about 1,9m long). Those bayonets was also used with Berthier rifles and carbines since Berthier Mle.1907 was introduced.
