Broadway Bridge

The Broadway Bridge is one of eleven Willamette River crossings in Portland, Oregon. The 1,613ft long bridge includes a 278ft double-leaf Rall type bascule draw span. This unusual design places counterweights above the bridge deck, exposed to the elements. The bridge was constructed in 1912 and is one of only three Rall-type bascule highway bridges (and by far the longest) that still exist in the United States today. The main span of the Broadway Bridge is 70 feet wide, carrying four lanes of motor vehicles and two lanes of bicycle/pedestrian traffic. Average summertime weekday traffic counts found 5,291 daily bicycle crossings, representing 16% of all vehicle traffic. #bridge #broadway #drawbridge #oregon #portland #red #river #steel #truss #willamette
