The FMC 5077 50ft Boxcar was a popular boxcar among many railroads. Such were purchased originally by the Maine Central Railroad. FMC is now owned by the railcar manufacturer Greenbrier.
When Guilford Transportation purchased the Boston & Maine and Maine Central, they inherited their fleets of boxcars. Many of these boxcars were painted into Guilford colors, and later, Pan Am. There are a handful of cars which still wear the Maine Central gold, but the paint is usually very faded and colored with Graffiti. With these cars nearing the end of their service life, these cars are expected to disappear from American rails within the coming years.
