The chair, designed in 1934, is constructed of a single 20mm thick solid poplar board. It is painted with high gloss vermillion enamel bordered by a gloss white alkyd stripe around the edge. The approximate dimensions are 29 1/4″ H x 15″ W x 17 1/4″ D.
Rietveld was an early proponent of inexpensive production methods, new materials, prefabrication and standardization. Many of his furniture designs were groundbreaking DIY templates and some “Crate” furniture items were sold as kits to be assembled by the buyer, novel ideas for his time.
The designer specified that the chair be finished in one of three ways: clear satin lacquer; translucent white with a gloss lacquer coating; or gloss vermillion (not too orange, as he put it) with a white stripe along its edge. #de_Stijl #Rietveld
