The Titan II was a second-generation, 2-stage liquid-propelled Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) designed by the Glenn L. Martin Company as the largest Cold War ICBM ever deployed by the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command (SAC). Weighing 330,000 lbs., with a range of 9,000 miles, the 103 feet tall, 10 foot diameter missile was topped by the Mark 6 re-entry vehicle containing one W-53 nuclear warhead with a yield of 9 megatons (three times the explosive power of all the bombs used during World War II, including both atomic bombs). With a launch time of less than one minute, the missiles were deployed in three wings (of eighteen missiles each) at bases in Arizona, Kansas and Arkansas, with each missile stored in a separate eight story deep hardened underground silo topped by a 740 ton blast door, fully fueled and ready to launch at all times, until the Titan II program was deactivated on June 23, 1987.
