When referring to railcars, a Gondola is an open car which is loaded and unloaded with from the top and consists of four walls and a solid bottom. The high rise gondola is not to be confused with an open top hopper, which is unloaded from the bottom via chutes. These cars are typically used for hauling bulk commodities which can be unloaded using cranes or buckets, such as scrap metal, construction waste, and household trash. They are a common sight on North American freight trains.
