The Evolution Series was introduced in 2004 by General Electric Transportation. The ES44AC is the most ubiquitous locomotive in the series, which is capable of producing 4,400 horsepower and uses AC traction motors. They were designed to be EPA Tier 3 emissions compliant, but when the EPA tightened their requirements to Tier 4, General Electric replaced the ES44AC with the ET44AC in their catalog for T4 emission compliance. BNSF rosters 765 units which were delivered between 2003 and 2009. 5718 to 5747 were built from 2003 to 2004 and were classified AC4400EV, 5748-5837 were built and delivered in 2005, the bulk of the ES44ACs, 5844 to 6438, were built between 2005 and 2009. 3282 to 3331 were made to be Tier 4 compliant, were ballasted and reclassified as ES44ACH. This example is an ES44AC, these locomotives can be seen pulling mainline freight trains of all kinds, including intermodal, manifest, auto rack, grain, coal, and other unit trains.
