Corbett Hall
Corbett Hall was named in 1963 for Edward Annand (Ned) Corbett (1882 to 1964) the second Director of the Faculty of Extension from 1928 to 1937. During his tenure at the university, Dr Corbett played an important role in the establishment of Canada's first University radio station, CKUA. In 1933 he founded the Banff School of Fine Arts. He initiated the Farm Radio Forum and Citizznes' Forum on CBC in the 1940s. The building was designed by a provincial Department of Public Work draftsman named WW Butchard and construction began in the fall of 1928. This E-shaped, modern Renaissance structure opened 3 January 1930 as the Edmonton Normal School and was the centre for teacher training in the province of Alberta. The plaster models for its stone detailing were made in Edmonton but the carving was undertaken at the Manitoba quarry where the tyndal stone was obtained. The facing reddish tapestry brick was manufactured in Medicine Hat. In 1988, all tenant departments/faculties were being relocated elsewhere on campus so that Corbett Hall could have extensive renovations to the interior and restoration to its original quality of the exterior. At a cost of approximately 11 million dollars, the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta has the distinction of being the only Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty in Canada to have its own building. The official re-opening of this beautiful, historic building took place 17 October 1991. #Alberta #Canada #Corbett #Edmonton #main_campus #north_campus #rehabilitation_medicine #rehabilitative #u_of_a #university_of_alberta
