AR-15 & AR-10 bolt lug design study

click on the components to see the bolt lug/barrel extension lug contact surface area under entity info. I modeled a bunch of different lug arrangements to see which ones are optimal. Assuming the axial depth of the lugs are the same as mil-spec, larger contact surface area means a stronger lug. It looks like 6 lugs or 3 lugs are the best. I also found out that a rounded bottom between the lugs combined with a more square topped lug makes the largest overlapping contact area per a given major/minor bolt diameter. Rounding the top of the lug like the Knight/Stoner SR-15 is not necessary, it just detracts from surface area. I also modeled a scaled up AR-10 bolt with a .540"/13.7mm bolt face for .375 H&H Magnum based cartridges like .300 WinMag.
