The Avalon Mall first open in 1967, and has since grown to become the largest shopping centre in Newfoundland & Labrador. To Newfoundlanders It is simply known as "The Mall". The Mall has expanded several times throughout its history, beginning with the major Phase2 expansion in the late 1970's which saw the introduction of many new stores until then only seen on "The Mainland". The Mall has since undergone many subsequent renovations including a major one in the late 1990s and early 2000s which saw the creation of the 12-Screen Empire Cinema complex, underground parking garage, and significant expansion of the former Phase2 and food court areas.
