Baldwin built only three examples of the type for the erie railroad between 1914 and 1916. the first was named MATT H. SHAY, after a beloved employee of that road. all three, shared the name triplex because of their three sets of drivers (compare to duplexes that had two sets). the triplex's purpose was pusher service. with all six cylinders operating at their full pressure (whichcould not be sustained for very long), the triplexes produced huge amounts of tractive effort (TE) that may have been the highest of any steam locos before or since. the triplexes could be considered the largest tank locomotives since the tender had driving wheels as well and thus contributed to to traction. the problem of variable adhesion on the tender was not a serious one, as pusher locomotives had frequent opportunities to take on more coal and water. please request more locos for me to make 'cause i'm gettin' board here. #28882 #48884 #huge #pusher #steam #steam_engine #steam_locomotive #tank #tank_engine #triplex
