Water Jet by Hero of Alexandria

J. Jones
Hero of Alexandria, a Greek mathematician and inventor is estimated to have lived around 117 B.C. to 81 B.C. ref: The Pneumatics of Hero of Alexandria from the oriignal Greek: page 52: https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Pneumatics_of_Hero_of_Alexandria/O8PVAAAAMAAJ This is another one I don't quite understand. I get that the "valve" allows you to continue adding more pressure to the chamber, but I don't get how the pressure doesn't escape as you're working the plunger (Y Z). Also, I assume the description of turning the (R S) (P O) tube means you turn it so that the opening of the spout (R S) will be blocked via contact with the pipe (G F)?
