Constructed of nickle alloys and usually painted white, Blue Steel was a 1.1 MT armed, 17,000 lb AUW air-launched cruise missile with a range of 575 miles at M=3.5. Powered by a HTP-Kerosene 2 chamber Armstrong-Siddeley Stentor rocket engine, guided by an Elliots inertial system, the missile armed Vulcan and Victor bombers of Strike Command between 1963-70. The weapon was terribly cumbersome and (surprise!) very unreliable- but totally cool, particularly some of the un-built variants.
