The Dash 8-40C, also known as the C40-8, is a six axle diesel electric locomotive built by GE Transportation from 1987 to 1992. These locomotives have a horsepower rating of 4,000 HP. Later models were equipped with a North American wide cab and were designated Dash 8-40CW.
CSX Transportation inherited 10 C40-8s from Conrail in 1999, numbered 7489-7498. CSX added another 147 units to their roster, numbered 7500-7646. From 2016-2017, they were either retired, scrapped, or sold. 24 C40-8s were bought by Pan Am Railways, where they operated until its acquisition by CSX, which was completed in April 2022.
A total of 8 C40-8s were given Pan Am colors, among them is MEC 7542. The rest were left in their old CSX colors, some mysteriously received brightly colored noses. It appears CSX plans to return them to their roster, as MEC 7627 was repainted into CSX Yn3c colors and renumbered to 9280.
