The Forth Road Bridge is a modern suspension bridge build in 1964 to provide a crossing for road vehicles from the Lothians to Fife. The bridge is four lanes wide (two in each direction) and has two pedestrian walkways on either side. The bridge is over 2000 meters long and spans just over 1000 at it's longest stretch. The bridge is expected to be operational until 2020 when it may be closed if major maintenance is not completed. Transport Scotland is currently designing an estimated £3.2 billion bridge to replace the current bridge, and if maintenance is carried out on the older bridge it may be used for buses and taxes only. The new bridge is expected to be constructed by 2015.
