Luisenplatz is the central square in Darmstadt and was designed as early as the 18th century. The Ludwigsäule (Ludwig´s Column) stands at its centre. Georg Moller built the monument in 1844 in honour of Grand Duke Ludwig I, the first Grand Duke of Darmstadt, who had received his title from Napoleon in 1806.
The monument is open to the public every first Saturday of the month (from April to October), so you can climb the 172 steps that lead up in the interior of the 33 m column to a platform below the bronze statue of Grand Duke Ludwig by Ludwig Schwanthaler a sculptor from Munich.
