Pratt Institute - Library Building

Taezoo
Made by Taezoo Park and Dohyung Ban 1896. Renovation, 1980-2. Architect: William B. Tubby. Originally, the Pratt Institute Library was located in the Main Building when it opened in 1887. This splendid Victorian brick building opened i n 1896. Originally, it was a public as well as college library. There was emphasis on service to local children, and in 1912, a copy of an English Romanesque porch (from Canterbury Cathedral) was added to the childrens' entrance. The porch was taken down and relocated in 1982 near the ARC building. The North porch was added in 1936 by John Mead Howells, and is now an office on the first floor. This was the first free library in New York City. However, as the Institute grew and the public library system expanded, it ceased being a public library in 1941. The elegant interiors, originally designed by the Louis Tiffany firm, have a lavish amount of marble, brass, and mosaic as well as glass floors. The renovation in the early 1980's restored much of the elegance. A new below-ground wing was added. as well as an elevator, new furnishings and other changes were made. The re-dedication was in 1982, and the building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1986. - from Pratt Institute Architecture (Sydeny Starr Keaveney - Febrary, 1988) #3DPratt #Pratt3D #Metaverse #PrattInstitute #digitaltwin
