This is a model used in the HP Mars Home Planet "The Urbanization of Mars" design project, I submitted this in an entry titled: "Initial Approach To Mars Urban Design."
The first buildings on Mars will be via utilizing space craft as the basis of design. Using tubular space craft sections, etc. However, as time passes, and greater expansion and construction begins, the matter of shipping large quantities of construction materials means getting the most out of each shipment, via using flat panel materials that stack up to conserve space. Hence the future constructions on Mars after the initial use of space craft based buildings, will be via flat square panel construction methods for efficient transportation of materials. Hence this is just thinking ahead.
