This is a model of a castle-like mansion I designed for a friend several years ago. Based on Medieval European architecture, especially that of Scandinavia, the design takes cues from Castle Keeps in Finland, as well as Romanesque-style chapels and 19th Century interpretations of Medieval stables. The house features an impressive set of spaces, including a large Great Room styled after the Great Halls and Chapels of Medieval Castles. The entire complex is surrounded by a wall, creating a separation between the more intimate spaces near the house and the less intimate, more publicly visible areas closer to the public right-of-way. The rear of the house includes a pool area, enclosed by a Romanesque-style cloister. A house like this would likely be expensive to build with current technology, but does express a level of craft, tradition, and detail that is usually not seen in today's hodge-podge mansions, instead recalling the grandeur and refined tastes of the past.
