I was looking through the preferences in Sketchup and I just found out about the sandbox tools. They actualy make it pretty easy to make terrain. I made this generic kid's sandbox just to start things off. If you want to use these tools, go to Window > then "preferences"> then click on "extensions" > finally click on the box next to sandbox tools and click OK. The sandbox tools should be on your toolbar on the top. Use the "from scratch" tool to make a grid, then use the "smoove" tool next to it to make the terrain.
