The GE B40-8 is a 4-axle road switcher locomotive part of General Electric's Dash 8 series of diesel-electric locomotives. Manufactured between 1988 and 1989, a total of 170 units were produced for ATSF, Conrail, BC Rail, the New York, Susquehanna & Western, and the St. Louis Southwestern.
The Providence & Worcester railroad operates 4 of such locomotives, 4001-4004. 4001 was purchased from the NYS&W, while 4002-4004 were purchased from BNSF and are ex. Santa Fe. Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) purchased the P&W in 2016, and the acquisition was completed on November 1st of the same year. Many of the P&W's locomotives still wear their mahogany and red paint scheme from before the G&W purchase.
