Luristan (Lorestān) comprises a province and a historic territory of western Iran amidst the Zagros Mountains, and is one of the oldest regions of Iran, having been settled in the third and fourth millennium BCE by migrant tribes called Kassites and Elamites. Luristan was invaded and settled in the second millenium BCE by the Iranian Medes, who gradually absorbed the indigenous inhabitants of the region, primarily the Elamites and Kassites, until they themselves were conquered by the Persians in the first millennium BCE. This model depicts an ancient Luristani decorated sword dating to the Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age, approximately 1200-900 BCE and is based on an actual sword which was held in a Private British Collection during the 1980's. The sword appears to have been cast in one piece. This, together with the quality of the decoration, and relatively thin, delicate nature of the blade, suggest that it ws intended purely for ceremonial purposes. The model on the right shows the sword in its' actual current intact and unrestored condition. The model on the left represents what the sword might have looked like in new condition.
