GE Transportation's AC4400CW was introduced in 1993 and production ran until 2004. While early models rode on GE's HiAd trucks introduced with the Dash 9-40CW, this locomotive was the first of GE's to employ its new steerable Radial C trucks to reduce wear on the rails as it went around curves. This locomotive was the AC traction counterpart to the Dash 9-44CW.
CSX ordered several batches of these units, totaling 615 AC4400s. These were delivered from 1994 to 2002. 1-173, 201-599 were classified by CSX as the CW44AC. The units numbered 5101-5122 were ordered with extra weight, and eventually were upgraded with electronics for higher tractive effort from 2006 to 2007, and this class was designated CW44AH.
Although many of these locomotives were involved in accidents, most still pull freight trains on the CSX system interspersed with modern GE Evolution Series power.
