USS Lexington (CV-16), nicknamed "The Blue Ghost", is an Essex-class aircraft carrier built during World War II for the United States Navy. Originally intended to be named Cabot, word arrived during construction that the USS Lexington (CV-2) had been lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea. She was renamed while under construction to commemorate the earlier ship. Lexington was commissioned in February 1943. This ship was the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name in honor of the Revolutionary War Battle of Lexington. Lexington was the final Essex-class carrier in commission, after USS Oriskany (CV-34) had been decommissioned in 1976. Lexington was finaly decommissioned in November 1991. On 15 June 1992, the ship was donated as a museum and now operates as the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay, near Corpus Christi, Texas. #1943 #1976 #1991 #1992 #aircraft #aircraft_carrier #Battle #Battle_of_the_Coral_Sea #bear #Blue #Cabot #carrier #Christi #class #commemorate #commissioned #construction #Coral #Coral_Sea #Corpus #Corpus_Christi #CV16 #CV16_USS_Lexington #CV2 #CV34 #CV34_USS_Oriskany #decommissioned #donated #Essex #Essexclass #Essexclass_aircraft_carrier #February #final #Ghost #honor #June #Lexington #museum #museum_ship #Navy #nicknamed #November #operates #Oriskany #renamed #Revolutionary_War #Sea #ship #States #Texas #The_Blue_Ghost #United #United_States #United_States_Navy #US_Navy #USS #USS_Cabot #USS_Oriskany #War #World #World_War #World_War_II
