Launched on St Patricks Day (17th March) 1938, HMS Belfast served for the Royal Navy during the Second World War & the Korean War before entering the Reserves in 1967. In 1967 it was due to be scrapped until a joint Committee of The Imperial War Museum & National Maritime Museum formed an ‘HMS Belfast Trust’ & successfully saved the ship. The ship was transferred to a mooring point near London Tower & was opened to the public in 1978.
