An old style "Knife Switch." Similar to what you might find in Dr. Frankenstein's lab. These kind of switches are rarely used any more, especially for high voltages, as the exposed conductors can present a hazard of shock. They were once common even for high power applications such as power plants and railroad usage in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
