Plant life props are very important for your model, providing an attractive natural and serene setting. But they come at a high price in terms of memory size and rendering time. Select the best tree for its memory size from the sorted range presented here. 2D facing trees have the smallest size and rendering times but have disadvantages with regard to realism and shadow casting.
It is suggested that you use a 2D tree proxies in the later stages of your design, only substituting the proxy trees for the final 3D trees at the very last stage (see https://youtu.be/Igiq30yydbo ). Even then to keep rendering times low, I would suggest using 3D trees only in areas closest to the camera and leave 2D trees further out. Furthermore use shadow settings only where absolutely required. For far backgrounds, use tree lines in my collections.
