William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge crosses the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland state. The bridge consists of two suspension, truss, arch and cantilever brdge sections. Both bridges have a center suspended span of 490 meters and side spans of 244 meters and were constructed by J.E. Greiner and Company. Southern bridge has a cantilevered second span of 212 meters and a clearance of 17 meters Nothern bridge has an arch span of similar dimensions. Both bridges have a total length of seven kilometers. The southern bridge was constructed between November 1, 1949 and July 30, 1952 and carries a deck 8,5 meters wide with two lanes of eastbound traffic. The northern bridge was constructed between May 19, 1969 and June 28, 1973, when the first bridge didn't offer enough capacity for the increasing traffic loads The northern bridge carries a deck 11,6 meters wide with three westbound lanes of which one is reversible. Both suspension spans are hung from two 36 centimeter thick cables. Both bridges have a center clearance of 57 meters. The towers on the souther bridge are 108 meters tall. The northern bridge has towers of 116 meters in height.
