Vauxhall Bridge, London

Vauxhall Bridge, London

Simon W.
New Vauxhall Bridge, as it is properly named, was constructed between 1898 and 1906 on the site of an earlier iron bridge. It was built by Sir Alexander Binnie, with granite piers and a steel superstructure after the original concrete design was abandoned when it was found that the clay soil would not be strong enough. The rather utilitarian design was greatly improved with the addition of eight statues, four on each side, representing Agriculture, Architecture, Education, Engineering, Fine Art, Local Government, Pottery and Science, designed by Frederick Pomeroy and Alfred Drury. The bridge was also painted in bright red, yellow, white and blue. Vauxhall Bridge originally was built with tram lines and in the 1960s became one of the first London roads to have bus lanes. It is Grade 2 listed. #bridge #London #road #statues #Thames #Vauxhall
