The Dash 8-40C, also known as the C40-8, is a six-axle diesel electric locomotive built by General Electric Transportation from 1987 to 1992. These locomotives have a baseline horsepower rating of 4,000 HP and were equipped with DC traction motors. Later models were equipped with a North American wide cab and were designated Dash 8-40CW.
CSX Transportation inherited 10 C40-8s from Conrail in 1999, numbered 7489-7498. CSX added another 147 units to their roster, numbered 7500-7646. From 2016-2017, they were either retired, scrapped, or sold. 24 C40-8s were bought by Pan Am Railways, where they operated until its acquisition by CSX, which was completed in April 2022.
One such C40-8, formerly CSXT 7627, and subsequently marked as MEC 7627, was rebuilt and repainted into CSX Yn3c colors and renumbered to 9280, the first in the series. The renumbering was so that there wouldn't be any conflict with the new 7000 series CW44AH locomotives.
