This is a Soap Box Derby racer built and driven by Joseph M. Harmon, who was crowned Champion in the Greensboro, NC local Derby race in 1959. His win sent him to the World Championship in Akron, OH, where he competed in field of 170 entries, winning two heats before being eliminated in the third round. Harmon was the first Greensboro entry to advance this far in Akron.
The car comprises an aerodynamic body over a tapered plan, with raised forward apron with a slight cleft on the fore deck. A tonneau stretches over the cockpit opening, fitting snugly around the driver’s face and shoulders while he sat in a crouch-forward position. The interior has upholstered padding to facilitate his comfort.
This model was created from color photos of the extant car currently geo-located at the Greensboro Historical Museum. Donated in 1993, it is at present not being exhibited. It is fitted with Official Soap Box Derby Championship wheels. Information on the interior was unavailable.
