The Aerial Lift Bridge was designed by Thomas McGilvray. It was opened on March 27th 1905. Because the population of Duluth grew so much, the bridge was upgraded in 1929–30 to the current lifting. The bridge raises its full heigt in ca. three minutes. Normally it goes up 25 to 30 times a day.
