The Dash 9-44CW, also known as the C44-9W, is a six axle diesel electric locomotive built by General Electric (GE) Transportation from 1993 to 2004. This locomotive is essentially the DC equivalent of the AC4400CW, though as AC traction was increasing in popularity among the railroads, the AC4400 eventually became favored over the Dash 9. This locomotive has been sold internationally, including railroads in Brazil and Australia.
In 2005, this locomotive was replaced in the catalog by the GE ES44DC. Norfolk Southern rostered 1,090 units total. Starting in August of 2015, NS began rebuilding their Dash 9-44CWs, along with their Dash 9-40C "Tophats" into AC44C6Ms. These rebuilds are slated for all of NS's remaining Dash 9 locomotives, though many can still be seen pulling freight trains across the Norfolk Southern system.
