GMDD GP40-2L - Pan Am Railways

The General Motors Diesel Division (GMDD) of Canada manufactured the GP40-2L at around the same time as EMD was producing the GP40-2 in the United States; from 1972 until 1986. Two variants of this locomotive exist; one with a shorter fuel tank and lighter frame designated GP40-2 (the W is added by rail enthusiasts to differentiate them from their USA counterparts), and the other with a heavy frame and full size fuel tank designated GP40-2L. The Canadian National Railway ordered hundreds of these locomotives, fitted with a distinctive 4-window wide-nose cab. Some of these locomotives made it across the border and were purchased by Guilford Transportation Industries, then known as Guilford Rail System and then Pan Am Railways. MEC 502 is a GP40-2L which belonged to Pan Am Railways' collection of GMDD power.
