A 75-foot tall granite obelisk built by Richard Sharp Smith in 1896 to honor Zebulon Baird Vance (1830-1894), a civil war hero and twice North Carolina governor. Vance was also famous for making a speech to the Jews called "The Scattered Nation," praising them for their religious tolerance and freedom.
