The longest of Spokane's downtown bridges, the Maple Street spans 1719 feet across the lower Spokane River gorge, soaring 110 feet over the Peaceful Valley neighborhood below. It opened for traffic in 1958. The chainlink "cage" over the sidewalk on the west side was added in the late 80s to prevent pedestrians from "bombing" Peaceful Valley with rocks, bottles --- even, on one occasion, a bowling ball.
